Dag 3: First meeting with our group, travel to Pisco by bus

Peru - Sunday 11 October 1998

First, we have breakfast together at 9. Everyone tells something about himself (herself). We're all 26 to 34 years old. I really think we're gonna like each other.

In our group are four people of The Netherlands and two Belgians, so it's a kind of 'Dutchy' group. Mike doesn't speak Dutch so good, so we speak English with him as well. Later during this trip, five other people will join us, we hear.

After having breakfast, we pack our baggage. At half past eleven, some taxis will bring us to the bus station.

Yellow cab

Our taxi is driving even faster than the first one that brought us to our hotel from the airport. Good heaven!!

I'm in the first taxi arriving at the bus station. Right when we arrive, at 11.45, a bus is leaving. Right. Afterwards, it appears to be the 12 o'clock bus that we should have taken. It's a crazy country!

Waiting for the next bus

We decide to take a walk in the neighbourhood. There is a market place where they sell all kinds of stuff: shoes, jackets, lemonade and electrical equipment. We buy some foot and drinks for lunch.

Finally, we can take one bus later, at 2 PM. That bus brings us to Pisco, a little village on the coast.

Our hotel is in a shopping street. Tucanseems to have chosen some quite luxuary hotels for us.

A few miles ahead there is a small fishermen's town. Over there, we have some drinks in a very luxuary cafe. We als try a local drink, 'Pisco sour', made of liquor, lemon and protein. It tastes very good!

We have dinner in a restaurant beneath our hotel. I hope take something 'real Peruvian', but it appears to be nothing more than a simple streak with fries. Too bad.

After dinner everybody wants to sleep immediately. We hear that there have been local elections. Because of that, there is a party in town. Together with Diederick and Otto, I decide to have a look. On a square, a street-artist is acting. When he understands we're Dutch, he starts making jokes about us. Especially about Diederick and his funny hair. He also sais that 'those tourists are coming only to see Machu Pichu'.
I don't understand why he sais that - aren't we in Pisco right now??

We can't sleep very well: the party outside continues all night.
