Dag 11: Flight to the jungle

Peru - Monday 19 October 1998

Early wake-up again, to the airport. We fly to Puerto Maldonaldo today, in the middle of the jungle.

On the map this is only a little part of the Brazilian jungle. But out of the window of our plane, all we see is trees!

With our new guide, we visit a fruit-market in Puerto Maldonaldo. Very nice things (but I don't dare to eat everything).

It's even hotter and moistyer than I thought!

In a hotel we change clothes and we get anti-musketo liquid. It feels a little bit burning, especially on my sun-burned face. I wash it off there.

It takes three hours by boat to get at our lodge in the jungle. The trees along the river are quite boring after just a little time. We do some nice birds from time to time. On the water it's much cooler, and that's much better!

The lodge is really beautiful. You get there from the river through a small path. There are four large huts: one for living and cooking and three for sleeping.

We don't have hot water, but we have streaming water. In the afternoon we have a walk through the bush for about an hour. There are really a lot of muskito's!! They say all the time that there is no risk of malaria here. I hope so, because I didn't take any malaria-pills. The Dutch health-centre said they weren't necessary, but other group-members were said that it was very important to take them.

Femke is sick and has a few. When she walks back to the lodge, the guide sends his mate with her for safety. It seems to be dangerous here. I'm glad our guide has a big knife.

Sunset is beautiful here. It takes much more time than in the mountains. There it's just *pew* and it's dark. I think it depends on the amount of moisture in the air.

In the lodge, we get a delicious dinner: chicken, rice, potatoes, salad, soup, papaya.
